Interview: Neil Smith on opening day defeat

  • Men's

We caught up with Manager Neil Smith following the opening day defeat to Tranmere Rovers in front of 1,539 at Hayes Lane.

“I don’t think we played to our full potential, it took us time to get into the game and by that time we were one nil down. I think we passed it well and players wanted the ball but after that I think we just went off the boil, lack of concentration and we were two nil down.”

“On a positive front I thought Joe Anderson was brilliant again, David Martin just keeps getting stronger and stronger, Reece Prestedge was another but I think collectively if we look at ourselves as a team there were one or two who probably weren’t on it today which is a shame because they have been on it during pre-season and I didn’t see that coming but we were up against Tranmere Rovers who are one of the favourites and apart from their two early goals I thought we handled them well and probably had the greater share of possession in the second half”

“There are clearly things we need to work on and that will be done on Monday ahead of our game at Torquay on Tuesday.”
