The Last Game

Bromley took on Notts County at Hayes Lane last Saturday, running out 1-0 winners in our last game after the weekend’s postponement at Halifax Town.

A close-range Jude Arthurs finish on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure three points for Woodman’s men.

The Opposition

Southend sit 15th in the National League on 32 points from 25 matches.

They have won three out of their previous five matches in all competitions, picking up ten points in the league as well as being knocked out of the FA Trophy by Dagenham.

Their top scorer is Rhys Murphy, the striker has picked up nine goals in all competitions during this campaign. Seven in the National League and two in the FA Cup.

The Shrimpers were admitted into the Football League in 1920 where they stayed for 100 years, including stints in the second tier, but they were relegated to Non League for the first time after a 23rd placed finish in League Two in the 20/21 season.

The Essex coast outfit have won the Football League Trophy (now known as the Papa John’s Trophy) three times, including back-to-back successes in 2003/04 and 2004/05. They have also been champions of League One in 2005/06 and the Fourth Division in 1980/81.

The Opposition Manager

Kevin Maher was appointed by Southend on 20th October of this year, where he had previously managed the U21s and U23s sides from 2015 until 2019. He has also been the Caretaker Manager at Chelmsford City in 2016 and Bristol Rovers in 2019 and 2020.

Maher has managed 18 games at Southend during this campaign, winning on eight occasions in all competitions and picking up 24 points in the National League.

During his playing career, Maher played as a midfielder featuring for Tottenham Hotspur during his youth career, Southend where he spent ten years making almost 400 appearances, as well as Gillingham, Oldham Athletic, Dagenham and Redbridge, Bray Wanderers, Whitehawk and Chelmsford City.

The 46-year-old picked up four caps for the Republic of Ireland’s U21 side in 1997.
