Report: Wealdstone 1-2 Bromley

  • Men's

Bromley made the journey to Wealdstone on Saturday 28th July, in what would be the Ravens’ penultimate pre-season friendly, before the kickoff of the Vanarama National League on 4th August.

In a fairly slow paced opening twenty minutes, both teams looked for a foothold in the game, and ultimately cancelled each other out.

The first chance of note for either side fell Bromley’s way after 22 minutes. After a Stones attack fizzled out on the edge of the Bromley box, possession was picked up by Omar Bugiel, who used pace and strength to brush off a handful of challenges and surge all the way to the other end of the pitch, but after pulling the trigger, he saw his low effort well saved by Jonathan North.

Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe, who was making his debut for the club after signing on loan from Colchester United yesterday, nearly opened his Ravens account with 24 minutes on the clock, but after chesting Frankie Raymond’s drilled free kick down, his shot on the turn was inches wide.

After Wealdstone failed to threaten David Gregory significantly, the best chance of the first half would fall Bromley’s way, and again, it would be the lively Ogedi-Uzokwe. After Bugiel chased down his own knock on and squared the ball into the centre of the box, Ogedi-Uzokwe, with his back to goal, took another shot on the turn, only to see it blocked by Connor Stevens, before Jerome Okimo positioned himself well to divert the follow-up away from the net.

However, after the break, it would take Bromley just two minutes to take the lead. A superb, pinpoint corner delivery from Raymond was met by the head of skipper Jack Holland at the back post, and he nodded past North to give his side the lead.

The Stones nearly responded just minutes later, as Joe White saw a goalbound shot blocked by a fantastic sliding challenge from Roger Johnson, before Holland blocked an angled drive from Bradley Hudson-Odoi.

It would be on 70 minutes that Bromley would double their lead, and it was George Porter who would score it. After Jordan Higgs had turned exquisitely to beat his man and delivered an inviting cross to the back post, Porter was on hand to slam the ball into the bottom corner from the corner of the six yard box.

The action wasn’t quite done there though, as Bradley Bubb reduced the deficit with five minutes left on the clock, prodding Jeffrey Monakana’s cross in at the back post to set up an interesting final period.

However, Bromley saw out the final handful of minutes to claim the victory, and will end their pre-season campaign away to neighbours Glebe on Tuesday 31st July, kickoff 7:45pm.

Bromley XI: Gregory, Adebayo-Rowling, D.Johnson, Sutherland (Higgs), Holland (C), Taylor (Williams), Raymond (Krasniqi), Bugiel (Hitchcock), Okoye (R.Johnson), Meekums (Mekki), Ogedi-Uzokwe (Porter).
