On Tuesday evening Bromley travel to Gander Green Lane for the rearranged Vanarama National League fixture, kick-off 7.00pm. Covid-19 caused the original date of 2nd January to be postponed, as was the home Boxing Day fixture against The Us.
This will be the second visit this season to Surrey, as the two Clubs were paired together in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup back in October, in which a Michael Cheek penalty put Bromley through to the 1st Round Proper.
Bromley’s upturn in results at Gander Green Lane in the 2000s are in complete contrast to those that went before the Millennium, when victories and draws were at a premium on their visits around the A232.
Sutton United were elected to the Isthmian League in 1963 and, after an initial victory in that season at Gander Green Lane in which Pat Brown scored all Bromley’s goals in a 4-1 victory, Bromley went on to lose 20 of the subsequent 27 various League and Cup visits to Surrey up until 1999. This included a 9-0 thrashing in the Amateur Cup on 14 December 1969.
Since the turn of the century there have been twelve visits to Surrey in which Bromley have won five and drawn three of the fixtures, the latest of which was this season’s 1-0 FA Cup victory.
Currently Sutton are situated in 2nd position in the League table with 43 points from 21 games, four points behind leaders, Torquay United, but with three games in hand over the Devon side. Last Tuesday they gained an injury time winner at Dagenham & Redbridge with a last gasp penalty; whilst on Saturday, due to the FA Trophy, they did not have a game.
The return fixture is scheduled for three weeks time, on Tuesday 23rd March at Hayes Lane, Kick Off 7.00pm.
