Ravens beat Chesterfield 4-3 in dramatic Hayes Lane clash

A Michael Cheek hat-trick and a late Sam Woods winner sealed all three points in dramatic style against Chesterfield on Saturday, winning 4-3 at Hayes Lane.

The Ravens could have put themselves in front on 17 minutes when a powerful Josh Passley corner found the head of Louis Dennis, but he could only direct the ball wide.

On the half-hour mark, the referee pointed to the spot after Darren Oldaker was bundled over in the box. Will Grigg stepped up and smashed home the resulting spot-kick.

Michael Jacobs nearly doubled the table-toppers’ lead moments before the break with an effort from range, but his rocket of a strike could only find the Glyn Beverly Stand.

The second half proved to be a completely different story with six goals in the final 45.

Just seconds after half-time, the Ravens netted their equaliser. Some brilliant closing down by Louis Dennis meant he could float a ball in towards Cheek who initially saw his header saved before bundling home the rebound. It wasn’t pretty, but Bromley didn’t care.

The Ravens number nine was on the search for goal number two, which eventually came, but his headed effort on the hour following an Alex Kirk cross landed off target.

Cheek did eventually net his brace when Corey Whitely fizzed a ball across goal and the striker was there to slot home and turn the game on its head.

The goal of the game came on 67 minutes when Ollie Banks’ effort from range crashed back down off the bar and over the line to draw the scores level again.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, the visitors regained their lead when a corner was turned in by Tom Naylor, his glancing header looping over Grant Smith.

Bromley pushed for a third and on 74 minutes; Kamarl Grant skipping past the defence before seeing his dangerous cross eventually cleared. The Millwall loanee was in the thick of it again moments later when his driven effort was well saved by Harry Tyrer in the Chesterfield net.

For the first time as a Bromley player, Cheek netted a hat-trick. Substitute Myles Weston played in a fantastic ball towards the danger-man who smashed home to level proceedings again.

During the eight minutes of stoppage time, Spireites ‘keeper Tyrer made a sensational save as the visitors looked to come away with at least a point.

However, that all changed on 93 minutes when a Kirk cross was turned in by Woods to lift the roof off Hayes Lane.

The Ravens held on to clinch a vital three points.
