Report: Bromley 0-1 Sutton United

  • Men's

Bromley couldn’t end their winless run as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Sutton United on Saturday afternoon courtesy of a 16th minute Omar Bugiel winner against his former club.

The Ravens made two changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Wrexham last weekend. Skipper Jack Holland returned to the starting line-up in place of injured Sam Wood whilst Josh Rees came in for Frankie Raymond.

It was the hosts who got off to the better start with two early opportunities to break the dead-lock falling their way in the first five minutes. After Luke Coulson saw his low drive blocked, a cross from the right found Michael Cheek at the back-post, but the striker’s looping header narrowly missed the target.

Billy Bingham was next to try his luck on seven minutes, letting rip from distance, but his effort flew just over Nik Tzanev’s bar.

Bromley’s early dominance didn’t stop there as Ben Williamson saw his close-range shot saved just moments before Holland’s header found the ‘keeper’s gloves too.

Despite the Ravens’ early chances, it was to be the visitors who took the lead after former Bromley striker Bugiel was found in acres of space before he slotted past Mark Cousins.

Going behind didn’t stop Bromley’s attacking dominance though as Holland was determined to mark his return with a goal. The skipper produced two shots in as many minutes, but both efforts were blocked by the Sutton defence and Tzanev respectively.

The Ravens were more dominant going forward, but it was Sutton who returned to the changing rooms at half-time with a one-goal advantage.

Unlike the start of the first half, the opening stages of the second proved to be much quieter. However, there was action off the field on the hour mark when the referee walked over to the dug-out to show Alan Dunne a straight red card.

Soon after, the hosts should have drawn level after substitute Aaron Rowe fizzed the ball across goal towards Josh Rees who skied an effort over from close range.

Adrian Clifton replaced Joe Kizzi on 75 minutes and nearly made an immediate impact, steering the ball just past the post after latching onto the end of a cross from the left.

The Ravens had another chance to level proceedings in the latter stages of the game when a corner found Frankie Raymond on the edge of the box. The number eight’s shot deflected into the path of Dave Winfield, but the defender could only strike the ball wide.

Deep into stoppage time, Holland latched onto the end of a corner, heading the ball towards goal, forcing Tzanev into a spectacular save.

That proved to be the last chance of the game as the U’s saw out the victory.

Neil Smith’s side turn their attentions to next weekend as they travel to Harrogate Town.
