Report: Bromley 1-2 Torquay United

  • Men's

Bromley could not continue their positive start to the season as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Torquay United.

The game started in a physical fashion with both teams putting in a number of heavy challenges. The first bit of positive play from Bromley came in the 8th minute, when Harry Forster dribbled his way past a couple of Torquay defenders to put in a dangerous cross, which was cleared for a corner.

Torquay United had their fair share of possession in the first half. Ben Whitfield whipped in a quick cross to which Mark Cousins palmed away to safety. However, it was Bromley who found the breakthrough. Ravens defender,  Byron Webster on the turn smashed in a venomous low shot to the opposition keeper’s left hand side after a corner. The Ravens were, however, forced into a nearly substitution in the 27th minute when Billy Bingham made way for former Millwall midfielder, Liam Trotter. Another opportunity arose for Torquay, when a cross came in for attacker, Danny Wright who could only place his header to Cousins’ middle, an easy save for the Bromley goalkeeper.

After some more positive play by Forster, the ball landed to Ben Williamson in the box who’s effort was easily saved by Lucas Covolan. A great half for Bromley on the whole.

The second half commenced and it was Torquay who attacked with impetus. The visitors appealed for a penalty in the 52 minute which was not given much to the disbelief of Danny Wright, who was shown a yellow card for his protests. Cousins was shortly called into action moments later, when Aaron Nemane drilled in a low shot which was palmed away and later cleared by the Bromley defence.

Torquay’s attacking play soon paid off. Adam Randell fired in a well placed, dipping shot from the edge of the area to equalise for The Gulls. In the 66th minute, Forster danced his way into the opposition box but could not find the target. As the game was coming to a close, Joe Kizzi nearly found the target when he placed his header to Covolan’s right side after Forster’s corner. In the 92nd minute, Torquay were given a penalty and an opportunity to seal all three points. Torquay forward, Wright converted the penalty, sending his shot to the keeper’s left.
