Report: Bromley 0-1 Charlton Athletic

  • Men's

In Bromley’s final pre-season game before the league season begins, the Ravens fell to defeat by a youthful Charlton side.

The Ravens’ first chance came within two minutes when George Porter dispossessed a Charlton player and surged forwards towards goal, before trying a speculative shot from just outside the box, which flew over the bar. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild was next to bite at the Charlton defence, this time with a moment of magic from the former Addicks man, in Maradona-esque style, turning the Charlton defender, creating space and allowing time for a shot. Hit shot was unlucky not to hit the back off the net, instead crashing into the post and bouncing off the girl for a goal kick.

Mark Cousins was required 20 minutes into the game, following Charles Clayton avoiding numerous tackles and sprinting forward, finding enough space for a shot, forcing a diving effort from Cousins to calm the ball away. The Charlton goalkeeper, Ashley Maynard-Brewer, was called to action a short while later, following some great build-up play from Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, with Cheek putting the ball across goal. Raymond got a foot on the end of it, but somehow the Addicks goalkeeper made a brilliant reflex save to prevent a certain goal, but the ball fell straight back to Luke Coulson who shot again, Maynard-Brewer reactedto save again to prevent the Ravens from taking the lead.

He was called to action once again minutes later, after Michael Cheek used his strength to shrug off a challenge and take the ball down, before turning and shooting inside the box. However, the Charlton goalkeeper was on hand once again to make a terrific save, this time with his feet.

The Ravens made a positive start after the interval, but so did Maynard-Brewer who made a terrific save from Coulson’s powerful, flicked header which was destined for the top corner, however, the goalkeeper had other ideas and tipped the ball over the bar in tremendous fashion. The chances kept coming for the Ravens, including a shot from Porter, but it had no real direction, just power, and Maynard-Brewer was able to smother the ball up.

Several substitutions, including a return to the pitch for Adam Mekki, introduced a different playing style for Bromley. Charlton also made many changes, including a change of personnel in goal.

Korrey Henry was unlucky not to put Bromley ahead following his introduction. Following a perfectly weighted flick from Adrian Clifton to Henry, he went in on goal but was unable to convert his shot as his low shot, failing to trouble substitute goalkeeper Nathan Harness, who made the save with ease.

With 4 minutes remaining on the clock, the game looked certain for a stalemate affair. However there was suddenly a chance for Charlton to take the lead following a coming together of Chris Bush and Jay Mingi, with the referee pointing straight to the spot. James Vennings stepped up scored from the spot, with a cool, calm and collected finish sending Cousins the wrong way and all but sealing victory.

Bromley: Cousins, Kizzi, Wood, Okoye (Holland), Coulson (Mekki), Raymond, Cheek (Clifton), Bingham, Bush, Porter (Henry), Hackett-Fairchild (Tanner)
