Bromley made the trip to Derbyshire and a sun soaked Technique Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with the match kicking off at 12:30pm along with all other footballing fixtures on the day, as a result of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

After a wonderfully observed minute’s silence in memory of the Duke, the match started in a cagey manner, with both sides using the opening minutes to settle seize each other up.

It would be the Ravens who went close first. A classic set-piece routine saw Jude Arthurs deliver the ball to the back post where Joe Kizzi outmuscled his marker, but could only head into the side netting.

Two minutes later, Kizzi would be in the thick of the action at the other end, as he did remarkably well to prevent a certain goal, clearing Curtis Weston’s shot off the line after it had the beating of Mark Cousins.

On 19 minutes, came the opener. Excellent play from Billy Bingham, who had just returned from a lengthy injury layoff, stretched to prod a loose ball into the path of Michael Cheek, who broke into the box and coolly finished beyond Grant Smith.

The goal sparked a long spell of pressure for the hosts, which carved out numerous opportunities to score.

Some well worked build up play saw the Spireites play the ball into the box, where Jack Clarke fired low and hard from just inside the box, but Cousins held it well, with Kairo Mitchell lurking.

Soon after, Bromley debutant Alex Mitchell thwarted the efforts of Laurence Maguire, who smashed a volley goalwards from close range, only for the on-loan Millwall man to make a well timed block.

Chesterfield would rattle the woodwork on 33 minutes, as Fraser Kerr glanced a cross at goal, before it hit the inside of the post and was cleared to safety by Kizzi.

As half time approached, Mitchell positioned himself well in the Bromley box to reach a cross from Clarke, but he could only prod the ball wide.

In the second half, Bromley would have the ball in the net again inside three minutes. Unfortunately for Ben Williamson, who beat Smith with a well weighted, lobbed finish, the offside flag was raised.

The hosts’ introduction of Nathan Tyson sparked the game into life, after an uneventful 20 minute period. The experienced front man took aim from 18 yards, but placed his effort over the target.

Cousins would have to be at his best on 71 minutes, as Kerr once again rose high in the air to powerfully direct the ball at goal from a corner, only being denied by some excellent reflexes from Cousins.

However, Bromley were soon pegged back to 1-1. Laurence Maguire picked the ball up at the back post following a game of pinball in the penalty area and dispatched a crisp effort into the bottom corner to level the scores.

The hosts could have completely turned the game on its head after 80 minutes, but Tyson’s header from a pinpoint George Carline cross cleared the crossbar by inches.

Then came the moment which saw Bromley back in front. After the ball was fed to substitute Frankie Raymond, he delivered a troublesome cross into the back post, which saw Kizzi outmuscle Maguire to reach and head across Smith and into the bottom corner.

Despite plenty of late pressure from the Spireites, including a succession of corners deep into five minutes of additional time, the Ravens held on for a 2-1 win for the second consecutive season at the Technique Stadium.
