Report: Chesterfield 1-2 Bromley

  • Men's

A late comeback from Bromley secured a 2-1 victory at the Proact Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as a Ben Williamson header and an own goal from Anthony Gerrard handed the Ravens the points.

In a far from eventful first half, it would be the hosts who would take the lead on 13 minutes. After a corner was not cleared by the Bromley defence, Scott Boden was able to keep possession on the edge of the six yard box with his back to goal, and hook the ball over his shoulder for Mike Fondop to prod home, despite Ryan Huddart getting a touch.

Despite Bromley starting the better of the two teams, the goal appeared to give the Spireites some renewed confidence as they continued to attack. Gevaro cut in from the right and unleashed a curling effort, but Ryan Huddart was able to make a simple save.

Bromley didn’t create any clear cut chances of note, with Michael Cheek’s flicked header from a Sam Wood cross being the closest the Ravens would come.

The hosts went into the break with a slender lead, yet, both goalkeepers were not significantly tested in the first 45.

Five minutes into the second half, new signing Dave Winfield replaced Sam Wood in what would signal a change of shape for Neil Smith’s men, who went with three at the back.

The change signalled a shift in tactic for Bromley, which saw more attacking threat. On 55 minutes, Cheek struck a half volley from the edge of the box well, but it was just too high.

After a scramble in the six yard box from a Frankie Raymond cross resulted in Chesterfield just about clearing their lines, but their relief would only be temporary.

After 78 minutes, Bromley’s first attempt on target of the second half resulted in a goal. A delightful free kick from Luke Coulson reached the head of Ben Williamson, who flicked a delightful header beyond Luke Coddington.

The joy of an equaliser would become delight at a second goal just four minutes later. Another piece of brilliance from Coulson, this time a cross, flicked beyond Coddington off the head of Anthony Gerrard, as the game completely flipped on its head.

Bromley saw out the remaining minutes to record victory, as attentions now turn to the FA Trophy, with Dorking Wanderers the opponents next week.
