Report: Sutton United 1-0 Bromley

  • Men's

Bromley fell to defeat at Gander Green Lane on Saturday, as a second half Jamie Collins header settled the affair in the hosts’ favour.

In a first half which was far from eventful, the hosts had the better of the possession and chances, with Bromley being restricted to half chances. On 9 minutes, Collins took down a crossfield ball from Nicky Bailey and stabbed it at goal from a matter of yards out, only to be denied by an outstanding save from David Gregory, before Richard Brindley cleared the danger.

Minutes later, the hosts would go even closer to taking the lead, as a Harry Beautyman corner was nodded at goal by one of a sea of yellow shirts, but as it was heading for the top corner, Sam Wood made a well timed jump to clear it off the line with his head.

Other than a couple of nervy moments for Jamie Butler in the Sutton goal, the Us were not subjected to any clear cut threats from Bromley in the opening 45 minutes.

As half time drew closer, it became clear that Sutton were dangerous from set pieces, and Bailey nearly put one away on the stroke of additional time, but could only head Beautyman’s effort over the crossbar.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Sutton would take the lead. Another corner from Beautyman was nodded across the face of goal for Collins, who rose high to head under the bar, before the ball squirmed in off Brindley.

Bromley adopted a change in tactics as Zavon Hines replaced Luke Coulson and manager Neil Smith ordered a change in shape. The impact was almost instant, as Roger Johnson of all players was picked out by a defence splitting pass from Frankie Raymond, but following an excellent cross into the box, Jack Holland couldn’t quite rise high enough to nod it home. Just a minute later, the imposing Marc-Anthony Okoye headed just wide from a Sutherland corner, as Bromley looked for a way back into the game.

Former Bromley man Brett Williams then went close to doubling his new side’s lead, as he surged past Okoye’s challenge in the box and struck a powerful, angled effort at goal, only to be denied by a good save from Gregory, who tipped the ball around the post.

Tom Bolarinwa then had a good opportunity for his side just moments after entering the game as a substitute, but after getting the better of Wood, his shot from the edge of the box was wide.

With Bromley running out of time to find an equaliser, Raymond hit a low drive from 25 yards, which was tipped away from danger by Butler.

The game would then enter something of a scrappy spell, and Bromley would have their best opportunity of the whole game on 88 minutes. A sloppy backless towards Butler was seized upon by Joe Quigley, but after going one on one with the stranded Butler, he opted to round him rather than shoot, and this allowed Collins to get back to the near post, and Quigley could only hit the inside of the post with his shot from the angle.

Bromley XI: Gregory, Sutherland, Johnson (Mekki), Holland (C), Raymond, Okoye, Porter, Ogedi-Uzokwe (Quigley), Wood, Brindley, Coulson (Hines)

Unused substitutes: Goodman, Goddard

Attendance: 2,086 (218)
