Report: Tranmere Rovers 1-0 Bromley

  • Men's

Bromley fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon, as a 36th minute Connor Jennings goal was the difference between the sides.

The home side started very much on the front foot, and James Norwood stretched the Bromley back line early on, shooting at goal from an angle, only for Jack Holland to produce a well timed block to deflect his effort wide.

Tyrone Sterling was then on hand to intercept a brilliant through ball looking for Andy Cook, beating the former Barrow striker to the ball and putting it out for a throw in. Holland again had to be alert not long after, as Cook swung in a dangerous cross into the six yard box.

Bromley we’re playing some nice football but unfortunately found themselves without any end product, and they were nearly made to pay on 15 minutes. Ollie Norburn fed the ball infield to Connor Jennings, who took a touch and shot from 25 yards, with his effort whistling past David Gregory’s left hand post by inches.

Soon after, Frankie Raymond played a clever corner along the floor into the box, where Louis Dennis peeled away from his marker and went to shoot, but mistimed his effort and made no contact with the ball. As half time approached, Dennis’ low cross into the box caused confusion in the Tranmere defence, and after Josh Rees scuffed his effort, the ball fell to Luke Wanadio, who curled an effort at goal from the edge of the box, forcing Scott Davies into a fingertip save, tipping the ball wide.

Bromley would rue that missed chance, as just two minutes later, the hosts took the lead. A long ball forwards, looking for the run of Jennings, was miscontrolled by Ben Chorley, and deflected off him towards the onrushing Gregory, squirming under the Bromley stopper’s body and into the path of Jennings, who tapped into the empty net from a matter of yards out.

After the break, the game shifted somewhat, as Bromley applied the more pressure and arguably had the better of the game.

That said, Norwood should have doubled the Whites’ lead two minutes in, but after going through on goal, saw his low effort well held by a stretched Gregory.

Brandon Hanlan then used sheer pace and strength to get the better of Steve McNulty, and got goalside of the veteran defender, but blasted a low volley straight at Davies.

Great interplay from Dennis and half time substitute Omar Bugiel saw them combine before playing the ball to Hanlan, who spotted the run of George Porter. Hanlan tried to play the latter in and through on goal, but his pass was intercepted and Tranmere cleared.

With half an hour left, a well weighted crossfield pass from Jennings found Norburn one on one with Gregory, but the ex-Guiseley midfielder struck an effort into the side netting when he should have done better.

The game then hit a period of few chances, before Bromley very much piled on the pressure during the closing stages. After Rovers again failed to clear in their own box, the ball broke to Porter, who would see his stinging drive parried by Davies and subsequently cleared.

In the dying moments of injury time came the best chance for Bromley to grab a share of the points. Great work from Dennis saw him cut in from the right and create space to shoot, only to see Davies party his effort away from goal. It fell immediately to Rees, who struck his volley high and over from the middle of the box.
