Report: Welling United 1-2 Bromley (PSF)

  • Men's

The Ravens made the short trip to Park View Road on a wet Saturday afternoon to take on local rivals Welling United in another pre-season friendly.

And it would be the visitors who would take the lead with barely a minute on the clock. A mazy run from Louis Dennis ended with a neat cut-back cross from the byeline, which was flicked home by the head of a Trialist.

Dipo Akinyemi was presented with the chance to shoot from the edge of the box just moments later, but almost cleared the ground with his rising effort.

Inside 16 minutes, Bromley would add a second. James Alabi’s flicked back-header reached Academy Scholar Kellen Fisher at the back post, and he had the simple task of prodding home.

The Ravens’ Trialist goalkeeper would have to be alert twice in the minutes that followed, reacting well to save two low drives from Akinyemi, who was certainly looking sharp for the Wings.

As half time drew closer, Sam Skeffington flashed a low effort wide, before Toby Stevenson stung the palms of Welling goalkeeper Tom Smith with a low, angled effort.

The hosts went close on two occasions just moments before the break. Lyle Della-Verde worked the ball into the box before unleashing a curled effort, but it was high and wide. There was nothing wrong with his corner delivery soon after though, but Aaron Barnes saw his flicked header evade the post by inches.

The second half was a quieter affair, with the Ravens making three changes at the break, introducing Archie Burnett, George Alexander and a trialist.

Danger man Akinyemi had another sniff at goal early on after getting in behind the Bromley defence, but was denied by a well timed sliding challenge by the recovering Stevenson.

Neither goalkeeper was really tested until 72 minutes, where Bromley’s trialist goalkeeper made another good save, this time getting down to his right to tip Bradley Stevenson’s drive around the post.

A Bromley trialist embarked on a strong run down the right and looked to power a shot goalwards, but his effort was wayward and didn’t trouble Smith.

Fourteen minutes from time, Welling grabbed a goal back, as a trialist tapped home a cross at the back post from close range.

Despite further driving rain and worsening conditions, the Ravens held on for another pre-season victory.
