Report: Wrexham 1-0 Bromley

  • Men's

Bromley’s trip to North Wales on Saturday afternoon ended in disappointment, as a Luke Young wonder strike 13 minutes from time sealed the points for the hosts.

In a fairly uneventful first half which saw the sides share just three chances, it would be Bromley who would start the brighter.

Excellent hold up play from Michael Cheek saw him chest a long ball down into the path of Reeco Hackett-Fairchild. He lined up a fierce shot from the edge of the box, which Rob Lainton had to react quickly to get down to his left and tip over the bar.

Soon after, it would be Ryan Huddart who would need to be alert, and he was, as he got down well to turn Shaun Pearson’s header around the post as Wrexham began to get a foothold in the game.

He would make an even better save just three minutes before half time, as Bobby Grant’s low cross was diverted goalwards by Paul Rutherford, only for Huddart to produce a fantastic block from close range.

In the second half, the hosts upped their game, as did Bromley. Four minutes in, Sam Wood’s excellent low cross seemed destined for the stretching, sliding Cheek, who was inches away from a certain goal.

Substitute Adam Mekki then went close with a piledriver from 25 yards, which appeared destined for the top corner, but for the slightest deflection, which took it wide.

Huddart was at it again just after the 70 minute mark, as he made a superb save to deny Grant, who was through on goal. Again, making himself spread, he did enough to prevent the Dragons’ forward beating him at his near post. Just a short while after that, he tipped Rutherford’s stinging drive from 20 yards wide, with the hosts coming the closer to breaking the deadlock.

They did just that on 77 minutes. A Wrexham corner was only cleared to the edge of the box by Bromley, where the waiting Young was on hand to strike a dipping volley beyond Huddart and into the net.

Bromley nearly equalised with the last meaningful touch of the game, but after being the first to reach across to the back post, Joe Kizzi could only flash a header across the face of goal and inches wide.
