Season in review: August

  • Men's

Neil Smith’s new look side started life in the 2019/20 National League with a trip to newly promoted Chorley, who edged Spennymoor Town on penalties in the National League North Promotion final the season before. Little did Bromley supporters know, it would be something of a month to remember…

The Ravens’ long trip to Chorley saw the season kick off with a not so thrilling 0-0 draw, with chances few and far between meaning both sides happily settled for an opening day point. There was no time to look back though, as a local Derby awaited just three days after.

Ebbsfleet United were the visitors to Hayes Lane for Bromley’s first home match of the season, and supporters were in for a treat. Michael Cheek opened the scoring against his former Club, before two very different but equally impressive goals from Billy Bingham put the result beyond doubt. Despite a late Fleet consolation, Bromley were 3-1 victors. Highlights from the game can be watched by clicking here.

Next up was the visit of the National League South Champions, Torquay United. First half goals from Jack Holland and Joe Kizzi, either side of a Jamie Reid penalty saw Bromley go into the break with the lead. Difficult weather conditions only became worse in the second half, as United struck twice to take the lead. Just a minute later though, the Ravens were back on level terms, as Frankie Raymond restored parity direct from a corner, with the wind claiming the assist. All of the six goals can be viewed by clicking here.

Two consecutive away games followed, the first of which was a trip to the EBB Stadium to take on Aldershot Town, a place where Bromley had been far from lucky in recent years, only ever managing a solitary point. However, times had changed, as a Holland header just before the half hour mark would prove to be the decisive goal. That historic victory can be viewed here.

Next up came a longer trip, this time to the North East, as Hartlepool United were the hosts. In a thrilling game, goals from Michael Cheek and a Reeco Hackett-Fairchild double saw Bromley overcome the challenge of the Pools 3-2.

As with every opening month, fixtures come thick and fast, and Bromley still had three games to play to see out the month of August. First up, it was a return to home comforts as Boreham Wood made the trip to Hayes Lane. In a match where chances were few and far between, it was another narrow victory, as Cheek’s 43rd minute finish proved to be the difference.

Just two days later came a bank Holiday Monday visit to York Road to face in-form Maidenhead United, and Bromley had to show character, as the hosts took the lead on 65 minutes. However, a quite brilliant brace from Hackett-Fairchild added to some brilliant goalkeeping from Mark Cousins to hand the Ravens a comeback victory.

The month would end with Bromley hosting AFC Fylde, a side who had been tipped to win the title, yet, had endured something of a slow start to the season. In a game where Jordan Williams twice had the Coasters in front, it would be a goal apiece from Bromley’s midfield maestro duo, Billy Bingham and Frankie Raymond, which would force a 2-2 draw and make it an unbeaten August. Highlights from that game can be viewed here.

Off the pitch, the month of August also saw a new dawn for Bromley. Robin Stanton-Gleaves took over as Chairman, while long standing Chairman and Club legend Jerry Dolke became Director of Football. You can read more on that by clicking here.
