Bromley made the trip to Derbyshire on Tuesday evening to face Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium, in wet and cold conditions.
The Ravens came out the blocks firing on all cylinders, and thought they were gifted a golden opportunity under a minute in, when Jordan Higgs capitalised on some sloppy defending to play Jack Barham through on goal, only to see the flag raised.
And 15 minutes later, it would be Barham who provided a fantastic cross into the centre of the box for the waiting George Porter, who timed his jump to perfection, but saw his free header skim the side netting.
Tight defensive work from Bromley restricted the home side to launching balls into the box. That, plus some neat attacking play, paid off on 36 minutes when Porter struck to put the Ravens in front. A Frankie Sutherland free kick from just inside the Chesterfield half was knocked back across the face of goal for the lurking Porter, who nodded home from close range.
Zavon Hines was the main threat for the hosts, and nearly equalised soon after. Cutting in from the left and beating Sam Wood, the former West Ham United man could only find the side netting.
Bromley held onto the lead, going into the break a goal to the good and in truth, were looking comfortable.
The second half again saw the Spireites restricted to few opportunities, with Zavon Hines’ blocked effort on 47 minutes being the only chance of note for the home side before the 70th minute, where Hines laid the ball into the path of Jonathan Smith, but from the edge of the box, he could only fire straight at David Gregory.
This was repeated by Kyel Reid on 81 minutes, before Hines shaped up to shoot from 20 yards and did so with power, forcing Gregory into a good diving save.
However, it wasn’t to be for Bromley, as on 88 minutes, Chesterfield were awarded a penalty following a handball by Richard Brindley. Hines stepped up and made no mistake, rolling the ball down the middle and sending Gregory diving to his right.
