With a whole host of fantastic strikers gracing the Vanarama National League throughout 2023, it was going to take someone special to top the pile on the scorer front.
From Nicke Kabamba to Paul McCallum this season or Paul Mullin and Macaulay Langstaff last campaign, the talent in the league grew from strength to strength last year.
That said, only one man could clinch the top scorer crown at the turn of the year…
And that man was none other than our very own Michael Cheek!
2023 marked his fourth year in a Bromley shirt and after bagging the Ravens’ first in Saturday’s 5-1 win, he ended the calendar year with 25 goals.
Barnet’s Kabamba followed in 24 whilst McCallum of Eastleigh ended 2023 with 23 to his name.
The Bromley number nine grabbed his first goal before going on to net a brace on 21st January against Aldershot Town before adding two more away at Scunthorpe and Altrincham respectively.
Before heading into April, Cheek found the net at home to Wrexham before another brace followed, this time in a 4-0 home win over Solihull Moors.
Ahead of our play-off campaign, our number nine netted a further three goals, completing four strikes in three games when netting against Barnet and Boreham Wood respectively after his brace against Solihull. He would then go on bag the equaliser away at Halifax.
Cheek was vital during both of our play-off outings, first scoring from the spot to equalise away at Woking before popping up with a 99th minute leveller at Chesterfield.
Cheek has added a further 13 league goals to his name during 2023/24, starting with an equaliser at Rochdale before finding the net against Southend to net his second in as many games.
The 32-year-old loves a Bromley brace and he popped up with two on the bounce during our 4-1 win over Maidenhead before doing it again against Gateshead.
A goal at York followed before netting five in six to conclude 2023. Cheek doubled Bromley’s early lead against Aldershot before bagging another double, this time away at Hartlepool. He added his name to the score-sheet at Roots Hall to net his first of three over the course of December, going on to bag home and away against Ebbsfleet United.
2023 also saw Cheek surpass 200 appearances whilst also picking up a number of Man of the Match awards.
