Rebecca Bays reports on Bromley Ladies fantastic start to the new year!

It was a must win game for Bromley Ladies, supported by the Churchill Theatre, who sat bottom of the table before kick off with six games in hand over their opponents.

The Ravenettes controlled possession and territory throughout the first half with Higginson in goal having very little to do. Bromley created numerous chances and had several efforts saved by the Comets keeper. Bromley’s deserved opener finally came when a quick throw by Robertson was laid into Nikki May’s path by Rafferty and her powerful shot went under the keeper. With ten minutes of the half remaining Bays ran past her full back and into the box before pulling the ball back to the edge of the box where Rhi Davies powerfully side footed the ball into the far corner. It quickly became three when Donovan’s cross field pass met Chloe Robertson’s run and she controlled it into the box and struck the ball past the keeper.

The second half started as the first had finished with Bromley sensing more goals. Despite the hail and thunderstorms Bromley continued to pass the ball well, with many moves starting from defence. It was Donovan’s ball forward which created the fourth goal, finding Rafferty on the edge of box, who with the best goal of the game powerfully found the top corner. Comets with a rare break forward crossed the ball into the box which was blocked at the near post but fell kindly to a Comets striker who pulled a goal back. Comets gained some confidence from this and Bromley had to rely on Higginson to produce a fine save, diving to push the ball onto the bar before being able to collect the rebound. Comets also had a goal disallowed when the defence stood firm and caught the striker off side. However it was Bromley who got the next goal, a corner from Donovan bundled home at the near post by Bays. Bays got on the score sheet again late on when she followed in a Donovan free kick (her fourth assist of the game) which hit the bar to stab home from close range.

Bromley now move up to seventh and were scheduled to play in the Kent FA Plate next week however the opponents, University of Kent, have withdrawn from the competition and therefore Bromley will receive a bye into the next round.
